Inspirado na revolução das rádios piratas britânicas dos anos de 1960, o filme conta a história de um grupo de amigos DJs que monta uma emissora num grande navio de pesca atracado na costa da Inglaterra. O ano é 1966, quando a principal rádio do país, a BBC, dedicava apenas duas horas por semana tocando rock and roll. Eis que uma emissora pirata cria uma programação de rock 24 horas por dia. O sucesso é imediato. Cerca de 25 milhões de pessoas sintonizam a rádio diariamente - mais da metade da população inteira da Inglaterra.
O jovem Carl chega a bordo do navio da rádio pirata, Rádio Rock, depois de ter sido enviado por sua mãe para ficar com o capitão do navio, seu padrinho, Quentin, à espera para definir que rumo tomar em sua vida. No navio ele vai conviver com a tripulação de DJ’s tresloucados da Rádio Rock, liderados pelo Count (O Conde) – um americano vidrado em rock and roll.
A estória é simplista e diverge um pouco do que aconteceu na época, na Inglaterra. Mas o que vale aqui é a lembrança do quanto o rádio era importante na vida das pessoas daquela geração.
Pare para pensar que, quem foi adolescente até os anos 80, não tinha TV a cabo, MTV não existia, internet nem em sonhos, quanto mais um PC ou notebook. Celular? MP3? MP4? Câmera digital? NADA disso existia! Tudo era à base do rádio ou da TV, sendo que a TV tinha somente canais abertos e além de tudo, a programação era toda censurada pela ditadura militar, a gente só assistia aos programas que os militares autorizavam. Então, para entender o espírito desse filme, é necessário se enquadrar a essa realidade. Lembro que, a gente morava no Rio de Janeiro, e todos os sábados à tarde, nós ficávamos ligadas na rádio Transamérica porque passava um programa só para Beatles Maníacos. Somente no início dos anos 80, foi fundada a Rádio Fluminense FM 94,9 KHz, conhecida como a "Maldita do Rock", que tocava rock o dia todo, o que era um delírio! A censura era barra pesada e transgredir ouvindo muito rock and roll, falando palavrões, fumando, era o máximo! Naqueles anos, ninguém tinha nem a tecnologia e nem a liberdade que os nossos filhos têm hoje em dia, então tudo era muito diferente e bem mais difícil, e o rádio era nossa base para o mundo lá fora.
Dessa maneira, quando assisti ao filme, fui remetida imediatamente a lembrança do início da minha adolescência e tudo que vivi naquela época dos anos 80. Em meados dos anos 60 eu nem sonhava em nascer, mas em 69 (o ano dos Kozmic Blues – para Janis Joplin), eu chegava no pedaço e tenho certeza que muitas das músicas que tocam no filme, meus pais curtiram na época, porque cresci sob a influência do bom e velho rock and roll. Ser jovem nos anos 60, 70 e 80 foi uma benção musical, assim como esse filme, que tem uma trilha sonora apaixonante!

Aos amantes do bom e velho rock and roll, antes das inúmeras subcategorias invetadas hoje em dia, vale a viagem ao passado musical. E Philip Seymour Hoffman está tremendamente sexy no papel do DJ Count! A-D-O-R-E-I !!!
